Overview

Dick Van Dyke, indisputably one of the greats of the golden age of television, is admired and beloved by audiences the world over for his beaming smile, his physical dexterity, his impeccable comic timing, his ridiculous stunts, and his unforgettable screen roles.

His trailblazing television program, The Dick Van Dyke Show (produced by Carl Reiner, who has written the foreword to this memoir), was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 1960s and introduced another major television star, Mary Tyler Moore. But Dick Van Dyke was also an enormously engaging movie star whose films, including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, have been discovered by a new generation of fans and are as beloved today as they were when they first appeared. Who doesn’t know the word supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

A colorful, loving, richly detailed look at the decades of a multilayered life, My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business will enthrall every generation of listener, from baby-boomers who recall when Rob Petrie became a household name to all those still enchanted by Bert’s “Chim Chim Cher-ee”. This is a lively, heartwarming memoir of a performer who still thinks of himself as a “simple song-and-dance man”, but who is, in every sense of the word, a classic entertainer.

About the author

Dick Van Dyke

Dick Van Dyke admits his retirement plans have yet to work out. With five Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy, Van Dyke has the zest for life that propelled him into the limelight with the Broadway and film version of Bye, Bye Birdie, The Dick Van Dyke Show and film classics Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. More recently, Dick has appeared in family comedies, Night at the Museum: The Secret of the Tomb and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Since Dr. Mark Sloan solved his final crime, on the long running CBS Series, Diagnosis: Murder, Dick's "retirement" has also included returns to the stage with Chita Rivera in A Dancer's Life as well as with brother Jerry Van Dyke in Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys. Dick's life-long love of singing, especially acappella, has lead to the formation of his singing group, The Vantastix. Started more than a decade ago, "just for fun", the guys have performed across the country at world class venues, including the Ford Theatre in Washington for President Obama. He has also been tirelessly committed to his work at The Midnight Mission, a downtown Los Angeles shelter for the troubled and homeless. In honor of Dick's on-going contribution to the world of entertainment and charity, he was the recipient of the 2013 SAG Life Achievement Award. The SAG Awards have become a very special place for Mr. Van Dyke. In 2007, when presenting the award to Julie Andrews, Dick met his future wife, makeup-artist and now occasional Vantastix vocalist, Arlene Silver. They were married on February 29, 2012, in Malibu.
